Short answer:<\/strong> To teach spelling at home, help your child say a word, listen for each sound, choose the letters that represent those sounds and read the word back. As their skills grow, teach common letter patterns, syllables, prefixes and suffixes. Keep practice brief, give clear feedback and use words in sentences and real writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This guide is for children who are beginning to connect speech sounds with letters, usually emerging readers and children in the early primary years. The wider BASICS app may serve a broader age range, but spelling practice is not a necessary goal for every toddler. Every child learns at a different pace. Spelling builds alongside phonological awareness, phonics, reading, vocabulary and writing. The aim is not perfect spelling from the start. Spelling Starts With Sounds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Early spelling begins with noticing the sounds in spoken words and connecting those sounds to written letters or letter groups. Speech sounds are called phonemes<\/strong>. The letters used to represent them are called graphemes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, the spoken word cat<\/em> has three sounds: \/k\/, \/\u0103\/ and \/t\/. In this word, those sounds are represented by the letters c-a-t<\/strong>. Saying the sounds and naming the letters are related tasks, but they are not the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      If the word contains an unfamiliar or irregular spelling, tell your child. Do not make them guess repeatedly. You might say, \u201cYou heard the sounds correctly.
