BASICS is a parent-guided home-support app: you answer questions, receive a goal-based plan, see three activities, watch demonstrations and rate how practice went. It can organise what to try next, but it cannot determine why a child covers their ears, avoids clothing, seeks movement or becomes distressed.

This guide explains how to use BASICS alongside everyday routines and professional care. It is not an on-screen sensory toy, a digital fidget or a clinical assessment. Its role is to structure hands-on practice while the child remains free to communicate, move away or stop.

Understanding sensory differences without labelling your child

Sensory processing is how the nervous system notices, sorts and responds to information. This includes sight, sound, smell, taste and touch, as well as movement and balance (the vestibular sense) and information from muscles and joints about body position and effort (proprioception). Everyone has sensory preferences, and a strong response to one sound or texture does not by itself establish a disorder.

Regulation also does not simply mean being quiet or still. A child may regulate by moving, stimming, asking for space, resting, using communication or accepting help from a trusted adult. The goal of support is safety, comfort and participation in a meaningful routine – not compliance or the suppression of harmless movement.

The Royal College of Occupational Therapists guidance on sensory approaches says sensory differences do not always amount to sensory challenges that require occupational therapy. Support becomes more relevant when the response regularly causes distress, creates a safety problem or limits activities the child needs or wants to do.

Notice patterns without assuming the cause

A behaviour can be a clue, but it is not a diagnosis. Ear-covering may mean that a sound feels painful or unpredictable, but it can also occur with ear pain, anxiety or a wish to leave. Refusing clothes may involve texture, fit, temperature, skin irritation, pain or autonomy. Crashing, spinning or constant movement may be play, excitement, sensory seeking, motor-planning difficulty, communication or several factors together.

The American Academy of Pediatrics policy on sensory integration therapies notes that sensory symptoms can occur alongside several developmental and behavioural conditions, and evidence for sensory-based treatment may be limited or inconclusive. Ask instead: What happened before, what did the child communicate, and what changed afterwards?

Before: Note the place, noise, light, crowding, clothing, transition, demands, sleep, hunger, pain and recent changes.

During: Record what you can see or hear – words, AAC, gestures, leaving, covering ears, freezing, crying, pacing or asking for a break.

After: Notice whether reducing input, changing the task, offering communication, waiting or trying a familiar strategy improved comfort or participation.

BASICS can help organize parent observations through its questions, goal plan and activity ratings. Those features are a starting point for home practice, not a standardized Sensory Profile assessment and not proof of the cause of a behavior.

How BASICS supports sensory-related routines

The BASICS app verify sensory regulation within occupational therapy and describe the same workflow: questions, recommended goals, three activities, demonstrations, therapist tips and parent ratings. They do not publicly verify a formal pathway called “Sensory Processing, Modulation & Regulation” or a fixed collection called “ways to feel calm,” so neither is presented here as a current product fact.

Use the app to answer practical questions: What is the goal? What does the parent do? What does the child do away from the screen? How can the task be made easier? How did the child respond? Stillness alone does not show that an activity worked.

Use videos as guidance, not a guaranteed calming tool

Watch the demonstration before starting so you understand the steps and the amount of help shown. If the child finds the video clear and comfortable, you can watch it together. Then place the device safely out of the activity area and do the hands-on part without repeatedly replaying instructions.

A familiar video may help some children; for others, light, sound or spoken directions may add to overload. During intense distress, prioritise safety, reduce unnecessary input and language, offer communication and check pain, illness, hunger, thirst or fatigue. An app activity is not the default response to every difficult moment.

Movement and touch: choice and safety come first

Movement or pressure-based play may be suggested in some sensory-support plans, but the response is individual. Slow movement may settle one child and make another dizzy or uncomfortable. Firm touch may feel reassuring to one child and threatening to another. Never force a hug, squeeze, touch or movement because it is described as “calming.”

The child must be able to refuse, stop or move away. Make a stop signal accessible through words, gestures or AAC; use a stable, clear space; and stop for pain, fear, dizziness, unusual breathlessness or greater distress. Consider medical, mobility, joint, skin and breathing restrictions. Do not add weighted equipment, restrictive wrapping or body pressure unless an appropriately qualified clinician has assessed the child and shown you how to use it safely.

The American Occupational Therapy Association Practice Smart recommendation advises against individual sensory-based interventions without documented assessment of the relevant difficulty because a poorly matched strategy may be ineffective or produce a negative response.

Make everyday environments easier to manage

The safest first change is often to the environment or task, not to the child. You might choose a quieter shopping time, lower background sound, allow comfortable clothing, explain a transition visually, shorten a routine, offer a break or make communication easier. These adjustments support access; they do not require the child to tolerate discomfort to prove progress.

Try one change at a time when possible. The Kent Community Health sensory-processing pathway recommends monitoring how one strategy has or has not helped. Look for a functional difference, such as dressing with less distress, joining part of a meal, entering a shop safely or returning to an activity by choice.

Follow your child’s observable response

Choose a small participation goal before trying a strategy. After the activity, record what happened: Did the child opt in? Were they comfortable? Could they communicate “stop” or ask for more? Did the change make the routine easier, make no difference or increase distress? A parent rating should describe the response, not reward stillness or obedience.

If a strategy repeatedly has no useful effect, stop treating it as part of the plan simply because it is popular online. If it helps in one setting but not another, the environment or task may be part of the difference. Share clear observations with the child’s occupational therapist or other clinician instead of presenting a sensory explanation as settled fact.

Using sensory strategies at home, school, and on the go

The same child can respond differently depending on noise, fatigue, people, demands and available space.

At home: Practise a new strategy when the child is reasonably comfortable, not for the first time in the middle of severe distress. Keep exits and stop signals available.

At school: Coordinate with the child, family, teacher and relevant support staff. A home strategy may not be permitted, safe or useful in a classroom, and school support should connect to participation rather than compliance.

In the community: Plan choices such as a quieter route, waiting option or place to step away. Do not use a video or app while driving; use it only when safely parked or when another adult can supervise.

During an immediate safety crisis: Do not rely on BASICS. Move away from hazards, reduce demands, seek help when needed and follow the child’s existing safety or medical plan.

Just One Norfolk NHS occupational-therapy guidance also notes that touch and deep pressure can trigger some children. Choice and observation matter more than carrying the same “calming tool” into every setting.

Make sensory support part of everyday routines

Start with one routine that matters to the child and family, then use the BASICS structure to keep the trial clear.

Choose one participation goal. Examples include putting on one comfortable item, remaining at the table long enough to eat, or completing one step of a washing routine.

Watch the demonstration first. Know what the adult and child are expected to do before bringing in the device.

Offer, do not force. Give the child a clear way to decline, pause or choose an easier version.

Change one variable. Reduce sound, alter the task, offer a familiar support or adjust the timing – not all at once.

Rate the response. Record comfort, communication and participation, then keep, adapt or stop the strategy.

Preparation may make a predictable routine easier, but it cannot prevent every episode of distress. A difficult day is not evidence that a parent failed. Recovery, rest and connection are also part of support.

What BASICS adds to home practice

The useful distinction is structure. Based on the current public app listings, BASICS provides:

Questions and a goal-based plan: Parents share information and receive recommended developmental goals and a summary of strengths and focus areas.

Three activities: The app presents a small daily set rather than an unfiltered list of sensory ideas.

Demonstrations and guidance: Activities include a video, simple steps and therapist tips so the parent can understand what to do.

Parent ratings: Families can record how an activity went and follow the child’s own goals without leaderboards or comparisons.

Broader developmental support: Sensory regulation sits within occupational therapy and alongside communication, social, motor and everyday skills.

These are product features, not proof that BASICS will calm, regulate or improve every child. Activity fit, health, communication, environment and professional guidance can all change the response.

Explore sensory-support activities in BASICS

Download BASICS to explore therapist-created goals, demonstrations and parent-guided activities. Use the app as a structured way to try and review support – not as a promise of calm or a replacement for assessment.

.basics-widget {
    width: 100%;
max-width: Persistent pain, feeding risk, injury, sudden change or major loss of participation needs more than an app.

Consider advice from a paediatrician, GP or qualified occupational therapist when the difficulty:

Regularly prevents eating, dressing, washing, sleeping, learning, play or leaving home.

Causes pain, panic, frequent injury, unsafe movement or risk to the child or others.

Leads to a very restricted diet, difficulty swallowing, weight change or concern about nutrition.

Is accompanied by hearing, vision, skin, movement, sleep or other medical concerns.

Appears suddenly, becomes markedly worse or includes loss of a previously used skill.

The right professional depends on the concern. Hearing difficulties may need an audiologist; restricted eating may need medical and feeding assessment; pain or sudden change may need prompt medical review. An occupational therapist can assess how sensory and other factors affect daily activities. BASICS cannot.

What to remember about sensory support

Start with observation, choice and a meaningful participation goal.
