Mentally and emotionally healthy people have a fairly good control over their behavior as well as their emotions. They are in a position to face the different challenges that life poses them. They are also able to build strong relationships with people whom they come across. Just as it is important to maintain good physical health, it is also equally important to maintain good emotional and mental health as it helps you lead a good quality of life. When your mental health is improved, you experience a great sense of satisfaction and achievement in your life.

What is mental health?

Well, it refers to the psychological well being of a person. It encompasses the feelings you hold towards your own self, your ability to be able to manage a myriad range of your feelings, your ability to deal with challenges and your ability to deal with relationships in life.

It is not the absence of any kind of mental health problems that reflects your mental health. It is a lot more than just being free of different kinds of psychological issues. It refers to the kind of positivity that you experience as an overall being.

People with good mental wellness experience:

  • A great sense of happiness and contentment.
  • An enthusiasm for living life to the fullest
  • An ability to bounce back after experiencing a setback in their life
  • Strike a perfect balance between work, family and other activities.
  • Build new relationships and maintain older ones.
  • High self esteem and self confidence.

All these positive characteristics contribute towards a person experiencing more mental and emotional health. People may experience trauma, stress and adversities in life. The mentally resilient people can bounce back easily than those who are not mentally healthy. The characteristic of resilience helps in balancing emotions and stress.

Physical health is also directly connected to one’s emotional well being. So, when one ensures that their physical health is in the pink of its condition, they can move on to the next challenge of maintaining good mental health.

Taking care of oneself definitely helps in having better emotional and mental well being. Having an active life and an engaging chart list for the day would keep one’s mind busy and active. Cutting out stress and worry from one’s dictionary would also help in achieving wellness to a great extent.

Connecting with more people, bonding with them over dinner or a cup of coffee really works wonders to one’s self. You can engage in activities that you like most so as to have feelings of contentment. Volunteer to help others. This gives a sense of immense satisfaction. Get into more social action and enroll into special interest groups. All such acts will keep you on your toes and at your wits best.

There are a number of external as well as internal factors that will affect the emotional and mental wellness of a person. Making a few changes to bring in that psychological well being is always a welcome move. Seek professional help if you are unable to move ahead on your own. There are quite a number of effective coping strategies that will help overcome negative emotions as well as help manage stress.
